Chris Gibbs

Assistant Professor | Ted Rogers School of Hospitality and Tourism Management, Ryerson University

Currently, he is a faculty member at the School of Hospitality and Tourism Management at Ryerson University. Chris has more than 20 years of diverse sports, entertainment and travel industry experiences that he uses to guide and engage the future leaders of our industry.

In addition to teaching marketing to graduate and undergraduate students, he also works with industry partners through the Institute for Tourism and Hospitality Research at Ryerson. His work with industry partners has ranged from tourism related programs with Tourism Toronto to trend watching web enabled programs with Fairmont Hotels and Resorts. With Tourism Toronto, he has helped develop and execute the Toronto Tourism Visitor Survey program that interviews 5,000 visitors each year.

With a background in sports management and marketing, he has developed innovative education programs for organizations like the National Hockey League Players Association and Pan-American Basketball Confederation (FIBA Americas).

Prior to Ryerson, Chris spent eight years at Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment in business operation and venue management roles. His last role was the Director of Business Operations for the Toronto Marlies and Ricoh Coliseum. He was responsible for relocating the organization’s American Hockey League team from St. Johns to Toronto and led the teams marketing, communication and ticket sales efforts. He was also responsible for managing the 6,000 seat sports and entertainment complex that is a current venue for the events such as the Royal Winter Fair, Toronto International Boat Show and live concerts.

Chris has also held leadership positions in the travel industry with Travel CUTS, live theatre marketing with Livent Inc. and attraction marketing with Playdium Entertainment. Chris has always found “white space” where he could create new business opportunities that help the company reach new markets with new revenue opportunities. He has built a reputation as an accomplished leader with an engaging presentation style.

Chris is an alumnus of Ryerson University’s, School of Hospitality and Tourism Management and MBA programs. He is also a PhD Candidate at Stirling University’s School of Communications, Media and Culture in Scotland. His PhD dissertation is a collaborative project about the Risks and Rewards of Social Media in Professional Sports.
