Dr. Steve Gupta, Doctor of Laws honoris causa, is a serial entrepreneur, visionary and philanthropist. Dr. Gupta started his career with a successful truck stop in Port Hope, Canada which he followed by adding a hotel and numerous restaurants to the property. This then led him to step fully into the hospitality and real estate industry. He has now turned that truck stop into an empire-The Easton’s Group of Hotels and The Gupta Group, develops, owns and manages a portfolio of hotels, condominiums and office real estate developments throughout Ontario.
Today his hotel portfolio consists of 15 hotels under the flags of Marriott, Hilton, Starwood and IHG across Canada. Many of his recent acquisitions has either been renovated or is currently under renovation. In 2015 he opened two new hotels – Courtyard & TownePlace Suites Marriott Markham, a hotel acquisition where two hotels are housed in one building. The Holiday Inn Toronto International Airport hotel, 450-rooms received a $20 million renovation; the Westin Bristol Place Airport Road, 290-rooms - $10 million renovation; and the Sheraton Four Points Airport hotel is currently undergoing a $6 million renovation.
Four new builds will be added to the hotel portfolio – a 128-room Residence Inn; a 144-room Element hotel; a 250-room full-service Hilton hotel at Yonge & York Mills; and a 188-room Canopy by Hilton hotel at 387 Bloor St.
Two hotels are currently being converted – Quality Suites Toronto Airport Road is being converted to Embassy Suites Toronto Airport hotel - $10 million renovation; and the Quality Suites Montreal Airport hotel is being converted to Embassy Suites Montreal Airport hotel - $6 million renovation.
His various hotels have been widely recognized with many different awards. Dr. Gupta has earned the coveted Developer of the Year Award from all Hotel brands, the prestigious Marriott Horizon Award, HAC Humanitarian Award, induction into the Tourism Industry of Canada Hall of Fame, and Ernst & Young Entrepreneur award.
The Gupta Group’s condominium projects have been award-winning and record breaking in terms of sales. His most recent project, Icona Condominiums in Vaughan, also includes a hotel on property. The Rosedale on Bloor condo project includes the First Canopy by Hilton in Canada.
Dr. Gupta stands for excellence and is always striving to not only achieve his dreams, but to give back to his country and community with pride for over three decades. He has sat on various boards – St Michael’s Hospital, Rouge Valley Health System, Centenary Hospital Foundation, Choice Hotels Advisory board, and he was appointed to the Governing Council of the University of Toronto. Dr. Gupta is the Chairman of the Rajesh Gupta Charitable Organization and is leading, developing and constructing a Meditation Centre for Spiritual Well Being in India to name a few of his philanthropic and charitable endeavours.
