John Rothschild

Chief Executive Officer | Prime Restaurants Inc.

John Rothschild is Chief Executive Officer of Prime Restaurants Inc. He started his career with Price Waterhouse in Toronto in 1972 and then in Milan, Italy from 1976 to 1977.

John then joined Cemp Investments Ltd., a private investment company in Montreal, as manager of a newly created office in Toronto in 1979. He was transferred to Montreal in 1980, where he became Vice-President of Investments until 1984 when he formed Rothschild Holdings Ltd., a subsidiary of Claridge Inc. (formerly Cemp), and acted as President. Rothschild Holdings specialized in investing in small to medium sized businesses.

Since 1993, John has been involved with Prime Restaurants Inc., which operates and sells franchises of East Side Mario’s, Casey’s and a chain of Irish pubs, and is the company’s majority shareholder. Prime Restaurants has 155 restaurants in Canada and the U.S., with approximately 8000 employees and system-wide sales exceeding $350 million, making it one of the largest casual dining companies in Canada.

In 2003, John won Ernst & Young’s Ontario Entrepreneur of the Year award, and was an honoured judge for the Ontario (2004, 2005, 2006) and National (2004, 2006) categories. John served as a Director of the National Restaurant Association in the United States until March 2005. In April 2005, the Ontario Hostelry Institute inducted John as a Fellow of the Institute. John is a former Director, past Chairman and was made a Fellow of the Canadian Restaurant & Foodservice Association in 2009, and a Director and Past President of the Oakdale Golf and Country Club. He has also served on the Boards of several public and private companies. He presently sits on the Board of the Toronto International Centre for Commerce, GS1 Canada, Celtrade Canada Inc., the Canadian Hospitality Foundation and the Canadian Opera Company. He is a Chartered Accountant registered in the Provinces of Ontario and Quebec, and speaks French fluently.

John is involved with several universities including Ivey Business School at the University of Western Ontario where he is on the Entrepreneurship Council as well as mentoring a strategy group. In 2008, he was presented with Ivey’s Distinguished Alumni Award. He has similar involvements at University of Toronto (UC) and Humber College.

John was born in Toronto and is married with one son. He has a Master’s in Business Administration (Finance) from Ivey and a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Toronto.
