Janice Solomon

Executive Director | Toronto Entertainment District Business Improvement Area

Janice Solomon is the Executive Director of the Toronto Entertainment District Business Improvement Area (BIA). The Entertainment District BIA was formed in 2008 and is one of Canada’s largest BIA’s.
As Executive Director, Ms. Solomon oversees the day to day management of this mixed use area – with a mandate to promote and enhance the Entertainment District.

Some key initiatives include:

Development and execution of prioritized elements of the Master Plan
The Master Plan provides a vision for the future of the area

  •  The plan includes recommendations for beautification of streets, parks, plazas
  • The identification of John Street as an important street, with a vision to transform the street into a Cultural Corridor
  • The development of a streetscape palette for the area
  • An integrated Environmental Assessment Study for John Street is underway

Development and implementation of a digital marketing plan for the BIA.

  • The digital marketing plan provides the BIA with an enhanced ability to work in partnership with BIA stakeholders by creating opportunities for member and public engagement in the activities of the businesses in the area ie: TIFF, Mirvish Productions, CTV, Much Music Video Awards, etc.

Nightlife Planning
To maintain a vibrant and safe nightlife through:

  • Development of a Best Practices document for Nightlife operators
  • Round table meetings with Nightlife Operators, Police, enforcement agencies and local residents – designed to bring about new and better ways of managing nightlife
  • Planning sessions with property owners – encouragement of diverse tenancy (to include range of hospitality and entertainment)

About the Entertainment District Business Improvement Area
Established in 2008, the Toronto Entertainment District Business Improvement Area's (BIA) mandate is to promote, improve, and preserve this dynamic area of Toronto. Benefiting from economic, environmental and social factors driving downtown growth, the Entertainment District is in the midst of a renaissance, firmly establishing itself as a thriving and vibrant district for living, creating, working and entertainment. The Entertainment District is comprised of some of the country’s most nationally and internationally recognized businesses and culturally significant organizations, including: the CN Tower, the Royal Alexandra Theatre, the Princess of Wales Theatre, the Rogers Centre, the Toronto Blue Jays, the Toronto Argonauts, the Air Canada Centre, the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Toronto Raptors, the Toronto Rock, the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Roy Thomson Hall, the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, CTV, CBC, NFB, the Four Season’s Centre for the Performing Arts, the National Ballet of Canada, the Canadian Opera Company, the TIFF Bell Lightbox and the Toronto International Film Festival.
The BIA has a Board of 20 Directors, three committees and two staff.
