A graduate of Duke University, John obtained his Masters from Northwestern University in 1995. John brings an extensive depth of knowledge, talent and leadership to the region. Beginning his Harrah’s career as a President’s Associate more than 17 years ago, John has achieved great results with each subsequent assignment, starting with Assistant General Manager roles at Harrah’s Prairie Band and Harrah’s East Chicago. In March 2000, John became Senior Vice President and General Manager of the newly acquired Players Lake Charles casino, successfully overseeing its conversion to a Harrah’s facility.
John became the Senior Vice President and General Manager of Harrah’s New Orleans in 2002. John was then promoted to President of the Gulf Coast Region in 2005, and quickly reaffirmed his ability to deftly adapt to new circumstances in times of challenge and adversity. He demonstrated great compassion and courage as he led the extensive recovery efforts for Caesars employees affected by Hurricanes Katrina & Rita.
In January 2006, John was appointed Regional President for Caesars Entertainment’s Atlantic City Operations. As Atlantic City Regional President, Payne was responsible the four resorts in Atlantic City with over 551,803 square feet of gaming space, 74 restaurants, 4 concert venues, 5,800 hotel rooms, 15,000 full and part-time employees and nearly $2 billion in annual revenues. In January 2007, John was promoted to Central Division President where he oversaw 20 of Caesars Entertainment’s casinos.
In June 2011, John was named President of Enterprise Shared Services (ESS). In this new role, John leads ESS and oversees several key shared service functions, including Gaming, Entertainment, Food, Beverage, Hotel, IT, Retail and Caesars’ national sales organization. John’s primary duties include finding ways to effectively share best practices across the Caesars organization and enhancing service delivery capabilities. In addition to his ESS responsibilities, John also oversees Caesars Entertainment’s new partnerships in Ohio, Maryland and Massachusetts.
John is strongly committed to community involvement and is a Board Member of the New Orleans Metropolitan Visitors and Convention Bureau, the Audubon Institute and the Idea Village. He is also a tennis and basketball player and is an avid Duke Basketball fan.
John resides in New Orleans with his wife, Machelle, and their daughters Kathryn (14), Grace (12) and Elizabeth (8).
