Tony Pollard is President of the Hotel Association of Canada. Born and raised in Montreal, Quebec, he graduated from Concordia University with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and from Carleton University with a Masters in Philosophy (Canadian Government and International Politics). He has 31 years of government relations experience having served earlier in his career as Special Assistant to the federal Minister of Transport and Senior Policy Advisor to the Secretary of State. Mr. Pollard has been with the Hotel Association of Canada since the establishment of its national office in Ottawa, Ontario in 1991.
In addition to being the advocate and spokesperson for the Canadian hotel industry, Mr. Pollard has written various publications including “Canadian Hospitality for Chinese Guests” and “Green Key – An Overnight Success Eleven Years in the Making”. He is a frequent guest lecturer at many colleges and universities as well as a speaker at national and international conferences. He has appeared as a travel industry expert on CNN, Sky News, the BBC, NBC, ABC, Canada AM, BNN and CBC Newsworld.
Mr. Pollard also serves as Managing Director of Green Key Global, operators of the Green Key Eco-Rating Program. The Green Key Program, an environmental assessment tool for hotels, was established by the Hotel Association of Canada in 1997 and has since expanded beyond the borders of Canada and into more than 60 countries.
Mr. Pollard has held a variety of other voluntary positions including that of Vice-President of the International Hotel and Restaurant Association (IHRA), member of the Board of Directors of the IHRA, the University of Guelph, Humber College and the Canadian Tourism Human Resource Council. He is a founding member of the Government Relations Institute of Canada and was previously the volunteer President of the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario. He served as an active member on many Canadian Tourism Commission committees and currently holds a place on the Editorial Board of Canadian Lodging News.
Mr. Pollard has been recognized nationally and internationally with awards including the Ordre du Merite Hotelier du Quebec, the Pinnacle Award, the Pistilli Environmental Award and the Confrérie internationale des Amis de l’Hotellerie et de la Restauration.
