Ed Pitoniak


Ed Pitoniak—beginning in February 2004—served as President, Chief Executive Officer and Board Trustee of Canadian Hotel Income Properties Real Estate Investment Trust (CHIP REIT), based in Vancouver, BC. CHIP REIT units traded on the Toronto Stock Exchange (HOT.UN) and during Ed’s tenure as CEO the company grew its revenues from $270 million to approximately $380 million and generated total returns for its investors of 103%, the best performance of any hotel REIT in Canada during that period.

CHIP REIT—with 36 properties across Canada, both brand franchise and independent properties—was named Canada’s Hotel Company of the Year for 2006.

In 2007 Ed led CHIP REIT through a going-private sale worth $1.2 billion, a doubling of the company’s value during his tenure as CEO.

In 2008, as President & Chief Executive Officer of the newly-formed bcIMC Hospitality Group, he oversaw Delta Hotels & Resorts and Silverbirch Hotels & Resorts (formerly CHIP).

Ed currently serves as Board Director and Compensation Committee Chair of Ritchie Brothers Auctioneers (NYSE: RBA), the world’s leading auctioneers of industrial equipment, posting gross auction proceeds in 2009 of $3.5 billion US and holding a market cap of $2 billion US.

Prior to joining CHIP REIT as CEO, Ed served for nearly 8 years with Intrawest Corporation, the world’s largest operator and developer of mountain resorts, including Whistler-Blackcomb and Tremblant, perennially ranked as the number-1 ski resorts in North America and Eastern North America respectively.

Prior to joining Intrawest, Ed served as Editor in Chief of SKI Magazine, the world’s oldest and most-read ski sport publication.

Ed is a graduate of Amherst College. He is a governor of Brentwood College School in Mill Bay, B.C..
