John has been in the hospitality industry for more than a quarter of a century. He held senior executive positions at Vancouver-based Coast Hotels from 1985 to 1991, and received extensive recognition for his achievements, including being named Canadian Hotelier of the Year by the Canadian Travel and Tourism Industry in 1989, awarded a “Top Forty under Forty” award from Business in Vancouver magazine, and selected as a finalist for the 1998 Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year award.
John and his business partner, Robert O’Neill, were co-founders of American Hotel Income Properties (AHIP) REIT in 2013 and of Canadian Hotel Income Properties REIT (CHIP REIT) in 1997 and served on CHIP’s Board of Trustees from 1999-2002. Rob and John were also partners with Intrawest in the ownership and management of Whistler Lodging Company. John is also President of SunOne Developments.
O’Neill Hotels & Resorts Ltd. is a leading Canadian hotel management company, recognized in 1998 by Foodservice & Hospitality magazine as Canada’s fastest-growing hotel company. More recently, Hotelier magazine awarded OHR one of its coveted “2012 Tops in Hospitality Awards” for greatest percentage business increase.
Today, O’Neill Hotels & Resorts and its subsidiaries operate a number of hotels throughout BC and the United States, including the Westin Resort & Spa, Whistler; the Westin Grand, Vancouver; the Coast Blackcomb Suites at Whistler; the Oceanfront Suites at Cowichan Bay, on Vancouver Island; the Embassy Suites Phoenix-Tempe, in Arizona; the Embassy Suites Dallas – DFW International Airport South, in Texas; the Zona Hotel & Suites Scottsdale, in Arizona; and the 32-property Oak Tree Inn chain in 19 U.S. states.
John is a member of the Board of Trustees for the Fraser Institute, is a Director of the Minister’s Council on Tourism on behalf of B.C.’s Ministry of Jobs, Tourism and Innovation, and is also a Member of the Collingwood School Board of Governors while also serving as Chair of the Collingwood School Foundation. He is a past Member of the Faculty Advisory Board of the UBC Sauder School of Business, Member of the Tourism Whistler Board of Directors and former Member of the Owners’ Advisory Council of Starwood Hotels & Resorts. John is also an active member of the Young Presidents’ Organization (YPO), serving on the BC Chapter’s Executive Committee for four years, culminating in his service as British Columbia Chapter Chair for YPO in 2004.
John is also a frequent guest speaker, panelist and Master of Ceremonies at annual events such as: the Canadian Hotel Investment Conference, the Western Canadian Resort Conference, and UBC’s Family Legacy Dinner (Sauder School of Business).
John received a Bachelor of Commerce degree in 1985 from UBC and also attended industry-executive programs at the School of Hotel Administration at Cornell University. John is married to Leah and they have three children. His hobbies include reading and running.
