CFO | Superior Lodging Corp.
As CFO of Superior Lodging Corp., Sam Charlesworth manages financial strategy, investments, tax and the financial structuring and operations of a group of companies with more than $365M investment capital in commercial and hospitality real estate projects across Canada. Superior Lodging is recognized as an industry leader in the Canadian hospitality sector and Sam works to maximize long-term shareholder value and ensure balanced growth initiatives for its group of companies.
Sam has an extensive background in public practice with more than 30 years of financial accounting experience spanning privately held investment corporations, commercial investments, real estate development, health care and retail. She has worked directly in private real estate for 20 years.
Sam joined Superior Lodging in 2000 after relocating from Vancouver and quickly saw opportunities in the group to combine her strategic financial approach with her passion for real estate. Sam now wears several hats, leading multiple initiatives that include sourcing and placing financing of more than $200M in real estate investments across Canada.
Over her career, Sam has been at the helm of several reorganization and restructuring initiates at Superior Lodging. She is actively involved in all aspects of asset acquisition and disposition and leads the tax and legal aspects of all mergers and acquisition activity. Sam is an active member on numerous boards associated with the group’s major investments.
Recently, Sam took on associated CFO roles in some of the group’s subsidiary companies. In 2011, Superior Lodging launched MasterBUILT Hotels Ltd., a vertically integrated hotel investment and development company. As an integral member of the executive leadership team, Sam managed its growth structure and deployed significant financial investments into building and operating multiple hotel assets across Canada.
In 2015, Superior Lodging leveraged the success of their business model in the limited service hotel marketplace by acquiring the Master License Rights for Travelodge Canada. Sam assumed the Travelodge CFO role and worked to restructure its Canadian team, leading a strategy to leverage and refresh this brand.
Sam is an advocate of lifelong learning. In 2016, she developed a specialized executive education program in conjunction with the University of Calgary’s Haskayne School of Business, and rolled it out across the Superior Lodging group. She was a presenter at the 2015 Canada’s Best Managed Companies finalists’ event in Calgary and took an active role in the planning team for the 2016 Calgary Real Estate Investment Show.
Sam is an avid reader and enjoys the outdoors in her spare time, especially golfing and biking.
